Workshop 2: Positive Assertiveness and Empowerment – Strengthening Your Voice in Academic Life

Expressing your perspective in a discussion, setting boundaries, or making your contributions visible: academic life presents many situations that call for assertiveness. For doctoral researchers, hierarchies, differing expectations, and uncertainty about their role can make these situations particularly challenging.

How can you communicate your needs clearly and respectfully? Which personal strengths and supportive relationships can help? This workshop offers an opportunity to explore these questions through practical exercises and situations from everyday doctoral research. Participants will practise techniques for confident self-expression, constructive communication, and clear boundary-setting.

The workshop also considers how institutional conditions and discrimination affect individual scope for action, and why mutual support is an essential part of empowerment.

  • Positive assertiveness: expressing yourself with confidence and respect
  • Body language, voice, and taking up space
  • Personal strengths, values, and barriers to assertiveness
  • Responding to interruptions, dismissive comments, and a lack of recognition for your contributions
  • Empathic listening, mutual encouragement, and supportive networks
  • Individual scope for action and the structural limits of empowerment

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish assertive communication from passive and aggressive communication styles.
  • Recognise and articulate their own needs, boundaries, and personal resources.
  • Apply selected techniques to express their concerns clearly, calmly, and respectfully.
  • Develop strategies for responding to challenging situations in academic life.
  • Explain the role of allies and institutional support in empowerment.
  • Brief introductory inputs
  • Movement and body-awareness exercises
  • Guided self-reflection
  • Pair and small-group discussions
  • Case studies based on academic situations
  • Practical communication exercises
Participation in the exercises is voluntary. Mutual respect and sensitivity towards personal experiences provide the framework for the workshop.
